Organoid biobanking: identifying the ethics
نویسندگان
چکیده
R ecent developments in stem cell research and genomics have made it possible to grow mini-organs, socalled organoids, in culture. Organoids are self-assembling three-dimensional structures that closely resemble the architecture and function of real organs and are seen as one of the most significant developments in stem cell research with a wide range of applications in research and in the clinic. However, the relevant ethics for organoid technology have not been sufficiently addressed. First, the moral and legal status of organoids deserves further exploration. Second, organoid biobanking calls for the development of adequate consent procedures in both research and clinical applications. Third, the concept of mixed models in biobanking of organoids requires distinct governance structures. Fourth, we anticipate ethical challenges related to clinical translation. Further interdisciplinary discussion is required to stimulate morally responsible innovation. ...................................................... “As organoid biobanking is growing rapidly, it should be scrutinized whether and to what extent organoids give new twists to the ethical challenges in stem-cell research and analogous fields.” ......................................................

متن کامل“It’s all about trust”: reflections of researchers on the complexity and controversy surrounding biobanking in South Africa
BACKGROUND Biobanks are precariously situated at the intersection of science, genetics, genomics, society, ethics, the law and politics. This multi-disciplinarity has given rise to a new discourse in health research involving diverse stakeholders. Each stakeholder is embedded in a unique context and articulates his/her biobanking activities differently. To researchers, biobanks carry enormous t...

BACKGROUND Amid continuing social unrest from the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent Fukushima nuclear accident of 2011, the Japanese government announced plans for a major biobanking project in the disaster-stricken areas, to be administered by the 'Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization' (ToMMo). This project differs from previous biobanking projects in that it 1) was initiated mainly t...
متن کاملBioethics and large-scale biobanking: individualistic ethics and collective projects*
Like most bioethical discussion, examination of human biobanks has been largely framed in terms of research subjects’ rights, principally informed consent, with some gestures toward public benefits. However, informed consent is for the competent, rights-bearing individual: focussing on the individual, it thus neglects social, economic and even political matters; focussing on the competent right...
